Physics Equation Recall

One of the issues that we find both as examiners and teachers of the new specifications (8463 and 8464) is the students’ recall of the equations. There are 21 on Combined Science and 23 on Physics although some are not present on Foundation Tier.

In order to help our students with the recall, we have produced a worksheet which is designed to help with the recall. Here is a small sample:

You can see that if the student remembers the picture and the sentence they can then write down the initial letters of the words. Adding an “=” and a “x” gives an equation which will score the recall mark. Once that is scored, they can then access the follow up calculation marks. This is important as I was in a meeting some years ago with a senior member of the QCA who described herself as “quite comfortable” that students unable to recall a formula would not have access to the calculation marks.

We have rearranged the equations so that all are multiplications (this is obviously acceptable in GCSE questions) and tried to make a way to recall the minimal number of “harder ones” (e.g. Power and Kinetic Energy). All is explained on the 2020 Revision Resources page. Have a look!
